Royal Navy Captures Somali Pirates

Somali pirates spotted in the Gulf of Aden were chased down by HMS Portland, using its Lynx helicopter and inflatable launches.

The pirates surrendered in the face of superior firepower from Royal Marines. They were found to have barrels of fuel, grappling hooks, ladders, rocket propelled grenades and machine guns.

The pirates were taken aboard HMS Portland whilst one of their boats was sunk - but because they were not caught red-handed attacking a ship they were released in their remaining boat, minus all their weapons.

Commander Tim Henry said: 'HMS Portland has once again demonstrated the coalition and Royal Navy's commitment to keeping the sea lanes open and making this key waterway safe for international trade.'

Er, yeah. Shame you can't just make them walk the plank like in the old days though.
