A gang of men pushed a 17-year-old girl into a canal in Slough on Sunday.
The girl was walking along the canal path in Grasmere Avenue listening to her iPod when she was approached from behind by four young men and pushed into the water.
Three of the men ran off, but the fourth helped her out of the canal before running away.
All four men are Asian, aged about 19 to 24.
The girl sustained cuts to her knees as she scrambled up the bank, nothing was stolen, but she lost a trainer and her clothing and personal possessions were damaged by the water.
PC Sophia Harrison, investigating officer, said: "Although she was not seriously injured, the young girl was very shaken and thought she was going to drown. If the fourth man had not helped her out of the canal, this could have been a very nasty incident."
Anyone with information can contact PC Harrison on 08458 505505 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
